Allow me to begin by updating my progress on the current work of fiction that I am working on titled Incident at Moran. In the last daily blog entry I laid out a challenge to drive it to completion regardless of all other factors. I committed to do so loudly and publicly. As of right now there are two pages typed up that function as the open of the piece. I wrote four pages longhand yesterday that are waiting to be typed. I believe the open is rough and it is undergoing an edit right now.
On the plus side of the ledger, I have a good grasp of the story arc, the characters, and the broad perspective. I even have a rough theme I am trying to work from as of right now. At its heart the story is a monster hunting tale using a creature that is far from common as the trope of the tale. The story revolves around a hunt for a ghoul and the path the one charged with bringing it to an end takes. I am trying my hand at making a female character the protagonist in this tale. I am hopeful that I can bring her to life and make her genuine in every aspect.
The thing I am unsure of right now is the length of the story. Often at the outset, I start with an idea of what type of story I am aiming to write, short, flash, novel, etc. In this case I don't know. I am planning to employ a tactic I have heard speaker on the floor of the US House of Representatives employ. I plan to let the story evolve into a 'for such time as I may consume' length and go from there.
My only goal here is to tell an entire story from beginning to end. I plan to let the length it takes to tell this story dictate what the final format is, rather than shoe-horn it into a specific type at the outset. Typically I try to figure this out on the front end and go in vain from there. I want to spend my energy where it will matter toward the end product.
Maybe reversing the process and letting the tale decide everything else will work better. Trying it this way given my lack of success otherwise can't end up any worse than any of my other efforts have. I hope to give the story a free hand to emerge as it will. The desire being to bring into existence a tale about doing things differently while still seeking justice for those who are incapable of seeking it for themselves.
I hope I am capable of this. I certainly aim to try.
