Today is the one year milestone of an awful anniversary. One year ago today, the world lost a comedic genius, a gifted actor, a humanitarian, and an all around good human being. One year ago today, Robin Williams lost the battle with his demons and took his life. Many have speculated as to why this happened, the most simple truth here is that the answer to question why will never be answered accurately as the only person who can give it clarity is no longer with us.
My purpose in raising this issue is not delve into the tragedy. The purpose is not to talk about the medical nature of depression. The purpose is not to quote smarmy citations to encourage people in general. My purpose here is simple. If you struggle with depression, as I have in the past at times, the BEST thing you can do for yourself, the people that love you, and the world as a whole, is to get it treated.
I recognize there is taboo associated with admitting to this somehow. I recognize that there is a stigma associated with seeking treatment for mental health issues. The reasons for this are many and varied. They are all excrement. The truth is that God put you here for a reason. You stand here at this moment in time for a specific reason. The biblical quote, 'For such a time as this...' from the book of Esther applies to you as much as it applies to anyone else. The world will miss the impact God has put you here to have.
In view of that allow me to say the following... SEEK HELP! GET IT TREATED! The insidious nature of this malady makes self-treatment and recovery a serious long shot. Do not think you are alone in this regard. Many have suffered from this, many do suffer today with this. I have also suffered from this myself.
If this sounds like a mental health public service announcement, I apologize, but these things need to be said frequently and loudly! You were not created by God to suffer depression in silence! The longer you delay seeking treatment the harder a successful recovery becomes. God made you for a specific purpose a specific reason. I can safely say that the reason was not to suffer depression your entire life.
So please, reach out. Speak up. Tell someone.
